Youth Development through the Arts
Did You Know?
- Students who participate in arts programs consistently outperform their peers on the Math and Verbal sections of the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT).
- The academic benefits of arts programs can cross social and economic lines. Students classified as "at-risk" or from low socioeconomic class showed significant improvements in all their elementary school studies after joining an arts program.
- Students in arts programs scored 30 percent higher, in basic academic skills testing, than students who were not enrolled in such programs, and they also demonstrated greater creativity and superior communications skills.
- Arts programs can jump start a childs learning, especially if started at an early age, and can help overcome the cycle of poverty, school dropouts and crime.
- The arts are especially powerful in the education of students with special needs. The arts can provide poor performing students with an opportunity for success and recognition.
- Arts programs can instill positive values in youth, nurturing community pride, teamwork and respect for different cultures.
- The arts are essential to the vitality and quality of life in schools and communities. Arts courses address both cultural inclusiveness and diversity.

RECREATIONAL ARTS PROGRAM (RAP)
Curriculum Guidelines
The Recreational Arts Program (RAP) is intended to provide youth a quality artistic foundation with an emphasis on fun.
The program is made up of three components:
ART HISTORY
CREATIVE EXPRESSION
ART INTERPRETATION / CRITICISM
Teaching youth basic art skills and techniques are important, but experience has shown that a good art education must include elements of art history and its interpretation. These elements are incorporated into each project and aided by visuals such as actual demonstrations, paintings and artifacts. Discussions are encouraged and youth are trained to verbalize their aesthetic judgements.
The following is a curriculum outline of the principals that are taught in this program. Each creative project is designed to address one or several of the following principals. Students are exposed to world class art during field trips to local museums and galleries. Wherever possible films and or actual artifacts are presented for detailed study, comment and criticism.
Visual Arts History
RAP students are introduced to a variety of cultural and ethnic art, such as Asian, African, Pre-Columbian, European, American and African-American.
Projects focus on the recognition and identification of works by famous artist, abstract art versus realism and actual artifacts of world cultures. After each presentation the youth are encouraged to verbalize their thoughts. This method promotes a variety of discussions and questions which help youth analyze and understand the creative process within different cultures as well as their own.
